Keywords: Rubella, pregnancy, prevalence

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of rubella in pregnants. The study group 156 consisted of pregnant women at 18-40 years of age. Fourteen were in the 1st-10th, 49 in the 11th-20 ieth, 52 in the 21st-30ieth and 41 in the 31st-40ieth week of pregnancy. Their parturition numbers were also different: 62 had their first pregnancy and seven had their ³ 5 pregnancies at the time of the study. The sera of the pregnants were studied with Novum and Meddens EIA kits for rubella IgG and IgM antibodies in the Department of Microbiology, Ankara University Hospital. The IgG positive sera were evaluated with latex agglutination method for rheumatoid factor. Rubella IgG seropositivity was found in 135 (86.5%) and rubella IgG seronegativity in 21 (13.5%). Twenty-one cases in the risk group were at the 18-30 years of age. Rubella IgM was found positive in 5 (3.2%) cases. Rubella infection may lead to poor outcomes for infants. To prevent rubella infection the serologic status should be investigated before pregnancy, the seronegative cases should be vaccinated and rubella vaccination program should be carried out routinely in Turkey.
