Carbapenems have been the most successful antibiotics in evading beta-lactamase associated resistance. Nevertheless, more recently, there is an increase in reports on plasmid-encoded carbapenemases from different countries. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of carbapenemase production in Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter strains. In the Microbiology Laboratory, Fırat University Hospital, 2002-2003, in nearly 18 months, 407 Pseudomonas and 152 Acinetobacter strains were isolated. Forty-two (10.3%) of Pseudomonas and 14 (9.2%) of Acinetobacter strains were found as carbapenem resistant in the disk-diffusion antibiotic susceptibility test. Metallo beta-lactamase production was investigated in these carbapenem-resistant strains with E-Test-MBL technique, and 10 (24%) Pseudomonas and 3 (21%) Acinetobacter strains were found to be metallo enzyme producers. Overall, metallo beta-lactamase production of Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter strains were determined as 2.5% and 2%, respectively. It is concluded that the preventive measurements are necessary in hospitals against metallo enzyme producer organisms.
