The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of ESBL production in enteric bacilli isolated from blood culture specimens and to determine antibiotic susceptibilities of ESBL producing microorganisms. The production of ESBL was determined with double disk synergy test and E-test method and the antibiotic susceptibilities of ESBL producing organisms were investigated with E-test. The study included 166 enteric bacilli isolated from 7856 blood culture samples. Of the enteric bacilli 35 % were ESBL producers. The antibiotic susceptibilities of the ESBL producing organisms were found as 100% for meropenem, 91% for isepamicin, 89% for amikacin, 64% for ciprofloxacin, 50% for piperacillin-tazobactam, 36% for trimetophrim-sulfomethoxasole and 19% for amoxycillin-clavulanic acid. The results indicate that the ESBL production of enteric bacilli isolated from blood samples is markedly high and meropenem is the most active agent against ESBL producing organisms.
