In this study, yeast isolates from various specimens sent to the Microbiology Laboratory of Mersin University Research Hospital between August 2003 and 2005 were evaluated in order to determine the distribution with respect to clinical specimens, clinical departments and years. A total of 872 yeasts which were isolated from 811 clinical specimens belonging to 471 patients were identified with conventional methods and when necessary with API 20 C AUX or ATB ID 32 C rapid assimilation kits. Of the isolates 398 were Candida albicans (45.6%), 162 C. tropicalis (18.6%), 93 C. glabrata (10,6%), 130 C. parapsilosis (14.9%), 33 C. kefyr (3.8%), 21 C. krusei (2.4%), eight C. inconspicua (0.92%), 12 Geotrichum capitatum (1.38%), four Pichia ohmeri (0.46%), four Trichosporon asahii (0.46%), two Saccaromyces cerevisiae (0.2%), two C. lusitaniae (0.2%), one C. rugosa (0.12%), one C. haemulonii (0.12%) and one Rhodococcus mucilaginosa (0.12%). In all of the sample groups the most frequently observed species was C. albicans (%45.6), but in blood cultures was C. parapsilosis (%51.8). Candida parapsilosis was the most increased species in the years. The increases in C. albicans and C. glabrata were found similar. On the other hand, C. tropicalis was decreased. Though C. albicans was the most isolated species, it was observed that non-albicans Candida species were increasing in the specimens sent from intensive care units.
