The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of viral hepatitis in children in Van, Turkey. The seroprevalence of hepatitis A and B in 168 children (6-10 years of age) coming without icteric symptoms was investigated. None of the children had formerly received hepatitis vaccine. Seroprevalances of hepatitis A and B were 9.5% and 59.5%, respectively. There was no significant difference between children living with parents and children living in orphanage. It was observed that hepatitis A seroprevalance was higher in crowded families.
