Keywords: Streptococcus pneumoniae, in vitro penicillin susceptibility, E test |
Penicillin susceptibility of 86 Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated from various body fluids in the period from January 2001 through May 2002 by the use of the E test. The strains were isolated from 41 (47.7%) bronchoalveolar washing fluid, 12 (13.9%) pleural fluid, 11 (12.8%) blood, eight (9.3%) were cerebrospinal fluid, five (5.8%) tracheal aspiration fluid and nine (10.5%) other body fluid specimens. Among the isolates 65 (75.6%) were susceptible to penicillin (MIC < 0.06 µg/ml). Thirteen (15.1%) of the isolates were intermediately resistant (MIC 0.12-1 µg/ml) and eight (9.3%) isolates were highly resistant (MIC > µ2 g/ml) to penicillin.
