THE PREVALENCE OF INTESTINAL PARASITES AT A PRIMARY SCHOOL IN NARLIDERE, IZMIR

Intestinal parasitoses show different prevalences according to geographic and socioeconomic conditions. This study was carried out at a primary school in Narlıdere, Izmir, where the students' families are of low socioeconomic level. Three hundred forty one students were examined for intestinal parasites. Natife-Lugol and floatation methods were applied for each fecal sample that was taken from students. One or more intestinal parasites were found in 147 (43.1%) samples. The most frequently detected parasite was Giardia intestinalis (22.2%); others were Blastocystis hominis (13.2%), Entamoeba coli (7.0%), Hymenolepis nana (6.7%), Iodomoeba butschlii (1.2%), Enterobius vermicularis (0.6%), Entamoeba histolytica (0.3%) and Trichuris trichiura (0.3%). When the study was compared with the study carried out before in the same region, it was concluded that substructure, level of education and health care of the area need to be improved.
