This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in patients hospitalized in the Hematology/Oncology Unit, Osmangazi University Hospital, between September 1999 and September 2000. Stool specimens and nasal swabs were obtained from patients at one week intervals and examined bacteriologically. Of 150 patients, 0.3% and 11.3% were colonized with VRE and MRSA, respectively. Two strains of VRE were found resistant to vancomycin. Also E test was used to verify resistance to vancomycin. Nasal colonization with MRSA was eradicated with topical mupirocin and isolation in one week and gastrointestinal colonization with VRE by isolation and room disinfection in two weeks.
