In this study, 75 cases of tularemia at Havza-Samsun region were evaluated retrospectively between January 2005 to February 2007. The disease has a seasonal pattern and has become most frequent in November through March. Of the patients, 42 (56%) were female and 33 (44%) were male. Mean age was 42 (3-75) and 94% were age of 18 and above. All of cases exhibit oropharyngeal form of tularemia. Antibodies against F. tularensis were detected in 35 (54%) of 65 patients with the microagglutination test, and 28 of them had 1/160 and higher titers. So far, 30 patients (46%) were seronegative. White blood cell counts were within the normal limits and mean erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 58 mm/h. The patients received daily administration of 1. g of streptomycine for 14 days. Of the 75 patients, 21 (%28) underwent surgical drainage. The cases illustrate how mode of acquisition (direct water-borne versus tick-mediated) influences the clinical form (orophyrengeal) of the disease. In addition, a brief review of the epidemiology, differential diagnosis, clinical manifestations, and treatment of tularemia is discussed.
