RECURRENT BACTERIAL MENINGITIS

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and laboratory findings in cases of recurrent bacterial meningitis (RBM). In the study, 17 cases of RBM admitted to the authors clinic between 2000-2005 years were retrospectively evaluated. Four of the patients were female and 13 were male. The numbers of episodes were ranged between two and six. Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture in four (23.5%) cases and meticiline resistant coagulase-negative staphylococcus (MRKNS) was isolated from a case who had an intracranial tumor operation history. Gram-negative diplococcus were seen in the gram-stained smear from CSF of one case. As predisposing factors for recurrent meningitis, two cases had head trauma, one had an operation history, one had firearm injury, two had head trauma and rhinorrhea, one had head trauma, sinusitis and rhinorrhea, two had head trauma and sinusitis, one had head trauma, mastoiditis and chronic otitis media, one had temporal abscess, mastoiditis and chronic otitis media and totally 65% predisposing factors were detected. Eleven (64.8 %) of the cases recovered without sequelae but four (23,5%) developed sequelae. Two (11.7%) of the cases died.
