Aflatoxins may cause acute or chronic disease both in humans and animals when present in high amounts in consumed food. Feed
contaminated with aflatoxin B1 which has a high carcinogenic effect, is metabolized in the digestive tract and passes into the milk of
animals as aflatoxin M1 (AFM1). Humans, especially infants and young children who consume contaminated milk and milk products
are at high risk for AFM1 toxin. This study was planned in order to determine the presence and level of AFM1 in market milk and
cheese commercialized in the Sarıkamış Region of Turkey. Using ELISA AFM1 was detected in 68 (85 %) of the 80 milk and cheese
samples tested, and in 30 of the samples (37.5 %) the amount of AFM1 was found over the levels permitted by the Turkish Food Codex.
