A 26-year old female patient with icterus and splenomegaly was diagnosed as autoimmune anemia and received steroid therapy.
When the anemia reoccured, she was vaccinated for pneumococcus, meningococcus and Haemophilus influenzae. Following the
vaccinations she underwent splenectomy. Two months after the vaccinations she was hospitalized with high fever, headache,
counfusion and agitation. The examination of her cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) showed the presence of purulent meningititis.
Ceftriaxon (4gr/day) was begun as treatment. Streptococcus pneumoniae grew in the CSF culture which showed a MIC value of
0,016 mg/L for Penicillin G. Furder examinations and serologic tests revealed the precense of systemic lupus erythematosus as the
underlying disease in this case of pneumococcal meningitis formerly vaccinated againts S. pneumoniae.
