Viral hepatitis is one of the most important liver diseases in Turkey and in the world. Identifying hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes has become increasingly important in determining the clinical course and managing antiviral therapy. Among the at least six major identified genotypes of HCV, genotype 1b, the one associated with a poorer prognosis, is the most prevalent in Turkey. The aim of the present study was to investigate the genotypes of HCV in anti-HCV and HCV-RNA positive patients in the Konya Region of Turkey. The study was performed in the Molecular Microbiology Unit of Microbiology Laboratory, Meram Medical School, Konya. The blood samples had been collected in the March 2003-March 2004 period. The HCV genotypes of 80 blood samples positive for anti-HCV and HCV-RNA were determined by ABI PRISM 310 Genetic Analyzer (Perkin Elmer, USA). All of the HCV RNAs genotyped was of genotype 1b (100%).
