Currently obesity is one of the important health problems around the world. It is accepted that enviromental, genetic, neuronal and endocrinologic factors take place in the etiology of obesity. Changing the dietery regimes or living style does not always solve the problem. Also realising the rapid spread of obesity like infectious diseases connote that the pathogens may have a role in the etiology of obesity. Studies on that basis have shown that 8 viruses can be stated in the etiology of obesity. Among them 5 animal viruses, namely; canine distemper virus, Rouss-associated virus type 7, Borna disease virus, scrapie agent and SMAM-1 virus have been described, four of which have effect on central nervous system while SMAM-1 acts directly affects adipocytes and also concerns human obesity. The remaining 3 viruses are human viruses, namely; Adenovirus 36 (Ad-36), Ad-37 and Ad-5. They affect directly on adipocytes. Although Ad-37 and Ad-5 cause obesity only in animals, Ad-36 causes obesity not only in animals but also in humans. These pathogens lead to accumulation of triglyceride and differention of the pre-adipocytes into mature adipocytes.
