The chickenpox and mumps are mainly childhood diseases. Encephalitis may develop during the course of these infections or in
postinfectious period. Atypical symptoms and complications occur more frequent in adult patients. The encephalitis may occur
during the period in which the parotid swelling is not noticed in mumps or the skin eruptions are regressed in chickenpox. In this
article, two immunocompetent adults with complications of mumps and chickenpox are presented, and the relevant literature is
reviewed. It is emphasized that complications can be prevented by routine vaccination.
