Keywords: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, blood culture, antibiotic resistance

Infections with Pseudomonas species in a hospital have high morbidity and mortality rates. In these infections, surveillance studies are needed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility profiles and their in vitro resistance rates for a rational empirical treatment.

The purpose of this study was to determine the antibiotic resistance patterns of P. aeruginosa strains isolated from hemocultures. Totally 56 strains of P. aeruginosa isolated from hemocultures in the Department of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology at Meram Medical Faculty, Selcuk University, between January 2006 and December 2007 were studied using Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion test. The resistance rates of the strains were as follows: 10.7% to amikacin, 17.8% to piperacillin-tazobactam, 28.5% to imipenem, 35.7% to ceftazidime, 39.2% to ciprofloxacin, and 51.7% to aztreonam. Amikacin was found as the most effective antibiotic.
