To determine the rate of carriage of Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) and Haemophilus influenzae in children attending day-care centers, cultures were made from throat and pharynx of 164 healthy children at the age range of 2-6 years six day-care centers in the city center of Van, Turkey, in March 2001. For cultures 5% sheep blood agar and chocolate agar were used. For the purpose of verifying the GABHS and H. influenzae, Strep A kits and H. influenzae Antisera Poly (a-f) and H. influenzae type b antisera were used, respectively. Twenty-nine strains of H. influenzae, 27 strains GABHS and five strains of H. influenzae type b were isolated from the children. The carrier rates of H. influenzae, GABHS and H. influenzae type b were 18%, 16% and 3%, respectively.
