In recent years, prophylactic antibiotic use after transurethral approaches has become standard, however, there is stil discussion on which antibiotic should be used. For this purpose 50 patients hospitalized in the Urology Clinic of Fırat University Hospital divided equally into two groups were evaluated. Intravenous ceftriaxone 1 g/day was given to Group 1 one hour before the procedure in and the patients in Group 2 received 400 mg ciprofloxacin intravenous in the preoperative period and postoperatively 2x500 mg/day ciprofloxacin orally up to the time of catheter removal. The patients were evaluated by urine cultures after one week of catheter removal. Urinary tract infection was determined in two (%8%) patients in ceftriaxone group and four patients (16%) in ciprofloxacin group. The difference in between the groups was statistically insignificant (p>0.05). Although both drugs were found to be equally effective in the postoperative prevention of urinary infections, it was concluded that ciprofloxacin can be preferred due to its cost effectiveness and simpler use.
