EVALUATION OF 40 BRUCELLOSIS CASES ADMITTED TO THE TRAKYA UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

The purpose of this paper was to evaluate retrospectively 40 brucellosis patients admitted to the Trakya University Hospital between June 1994 and July 2001, according to their clinical and laboratory findings. Diagnostic criteria were standard tube agglutination test (STA) at titer ≥1: 160 with symptoms suggestive of brucellosis and /or positive blood cultures. Thirty-one of the patients were male and nine were female, and 25 of patients had a history of ingestion o contaminated dairy product. The main presenting symptoms were fever (90%), sweating (82.5 %), malaise (65%), anorexia (55%), arthralgia (40%), back pain (37.5%), and weight loss (27.5%). Lymphadenopathy (17.5%), splenomegaly (40%), hepatomegaly (27.5%) were also detected in physical examination. There were leukopenia in 30%, thrombocytopenia in 35 %, thrombocytosis in 62.5%, anemia in 40%, increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate in 90%, CRP positivity in 82.5%, increased AST level in 67.5%, increased ALT level in 55% of patients. Standard tube agglutination test was positive in 87.5% and blood cultures in 72.5% of the patients.
