Accurate detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is not feasible evermore because of heterogeneous resistance in Staphylococcus aureus. The aim of this study was to compare cefoxitin disk diffusion test and presently used other tests for detection of MRSA. For this purpose, 300 Staphylococcus aureus strains were tested. Methicillin resistance was evaluated using oxacillin (1 µg) disk diffusion test, cefoxitin (30 µg) disk diffusion test, oxacillin-agar screening and MRSA-screen latex agglutination test (Denka-Seiken, Japan). The presence of mecA as the “gold standard” was investigated by PCR. The sensitivities of oxacillin (1 µg) disk diffusion test, cefoxitin (30 µg) disk diffusion test, oxacillin-agar screening and MRSA-screen latex agglutination tests were found as %98.8, %98.3, %97.7 and %98.8, respectively, and specificities as %99.1, %99.1, %97.4 and %98.3, respectively. In conclusion, cefoxitin (30 µg) disk diffusion test was found as a reliable test for the detection of MRSA.
