Keywords: Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), in vitro antibiotic susceptibility, fusidic acid, disk diffusion method

In recent years high resistance to antibiotics used for Staphylococcus aureus infections causes problems in therapy. The purpose of the study was to determine the susceptibility of S. aureus strains to fusidic acid and various antibiotics by disk diffusion method. Of the total 215 S. aureus strains 144 (67%) were found methicillin-sensitive and 71 (33%) methicillin-resistant. All of the S. aureus strains were susceptible to vancomycin. The sensitivity rates of methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) isolates were 97.2% for fusidic acid, cefadroxil and cefuroxime axetil; 96.5% for ampicillin/sulbactam and 94.4% for erythromycin. On the other hand, for methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains sensitivity rates were 88.7% for fusidic acid, 40.8% for erythromycin, 31% for cefadroxil and ampicillin/ sulbactam and 25.3% for cefuroxime axetil. The high sensitivity of S. aureus strains to fusidic acid indicates that fusidic acid is a good alternative for the treatment of staphylococcal infections.
