The purpose of this study was to test the activities of amoxicillin and levofloxacin in penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae infected guinea pigs. Guinea pigs were intratracheally inoculated with 1.4x108 bacteria and treated with amoxicillin 200 mg/kg/day and levofloxacin 7 mg/kg/day. A positive control group was infected but not received antibiotic. 48 h after bacterial challenge, guinea pigs were euthanised and the lungs were excised and weighed. The lungs were homogenized to determine the number of cfu per gram of tissue quantitatively. Both amoxicillin and levofloxacin reduced the number of cfu per gram comparing with the control group but the difference was not found significant statistically (amoxicillin-control p<0.05, levofloxacin-control p<0.05).
