In the frame of PEP, feacal samples obtained from Acute Flask Paralysis (AFP) cases and contact cases have been sent by Provincial Health Directorates to our laboratory which is confirmed by WHO as the National Polio Laboratory. All feacal samples sent in properly cool conditions have been examined for enteroviruses including poliovirus isolation and identification. The last case of poliomyelitis in Turkey was detected in Ağrı on the 26th of November, 1998, and caused by wild type-1 poliovirus. Despite improvements in AFP surveillance, no wild virus associated case of poliomyelitis was detected in the years of 1999 and 2000. AFP surveillance will continue to be strengthened to meet the criteria for certification of the country as polio-free after wild virus transmission is ceased.
