In this study, Candida strains isolated from various specimens sent to the routine microbiology laboratories of Atatürk University Research Hospitals were evaluated in order to determine the distribution with respect to clinical specimens and to ascertain the frequency of non-albicans strains known to be more resistant. A total of 363 yeast strains were identified in terms of fermentation and assimilation reactions with API 20C AUX kit and morphologic appearance on Tween 80 corn-meal agar and germ tube test. Of 363 Candida strains isolated in this study, 172 were Candida albicans (47.4%), 79 C. tropicalis (21.8%), 55 C. glabrata (15.2%), 18 C. parapsilosis (5%), 18 C. kefyr (5%), 11 C. krusei (3%), nine C. lypolitica (2.5%) and one C. lusitaniae (0.3%).
