The aim of this study was to obtain data on susceptibility patterns of Escherichia coli strains responsible for community acquired urinary
tract infections in Didim, Turkey. During the June 2004-May 2005 period, 112 E. coli isolates causing community acquired urinary
tract infection were collected and their in vitro antibiotic susceptibility was determined using disk diffusion test. The resistance
rates of E. coli strains were as follows: to trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) (%37.5), nitrofurantoin (%25), cephalozolin
(%37.5), cefuroxime axetil (%17.8), cefixime (%8.9), amoxicillin/clavulanate (%28.5), ciprofloxacin (%14.2) and gentamicin (%26.7).
Empirical therapy should be based on local antimicrobial resistance monitoring in order to optimize the use of these drugs.
