The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate of nosocomial infections and frequency of nosocomial pathogens in Pamukkale University Hospital between 2004 and 2006. All patients hospitalized in the hospital during the three year period were followed up with a prospective nosocomial infection surveillance method. An overall 1885 infection attacks were detected. Nosocomial infection rates were found to range between 3.8% and 4.6%. The most commonly observed infections in Anesthesiology İntensive Care Unit were pneumonia, bloodstream infections and urinary tract infections. On the other hand, urinary tract infections were the most
frequent in units other than anesthesiology intensive care, followed by pneumonia, surgical site and bloodstream infections. The data acquired through this surveillance might contribute to the development of effective infection control strategies in our hospital.
