The purpose of this study was to determine the methicillin resistance in nasal staphylococci in hospital staff and also to determine
the distribution of these two factors according to professional groups and clinics. In Çanakkale State Hospital in 2007 94 strains of
nasal staphylococci were isolated from 106 staff members. The strains were identified using conventional methods: 84 were
Staphylococcus aureus and 10 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). Of the S. aureus strains 41.6 % was methicillin resistant.
Slime production was positive in 40.4 % of S. aureus and in 40 % of CNS strains. Slime prodiction by S. aureus was positive in 24.4
% of methicillin resistant strains. The distribution of methicillin resistant S. aureus strains according to the clinics was as follows: 76
% in intensive care unit, 32.5 % in surgery, and 12.5 %in children's and newborn clinic staff. The distribution of methicillin resistant
S. aureus according to professional groups was as follows: 58.3 % in laymen, 42.8 % in nurses, and 33.3 % in doctors.
