The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalance of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and HIV in blood
donors in the Konya Region, Turkey. Totally 4700 donors (average age, 35 years) applying to the Blood Bank of Konya Educational
and Research Hospital between January 2007 and January 2008, and 160 medical staff members (average age, 38.46 years)
working in Beyhekim Mouth and Dental Health Center were evaluated in terms of their HBV, HCV and HIV seropositivity rates. Risk
factors such as profession, dental treatment, blood transfusion, surgical instrumentation, tattooing, ear and/or skin piercing were
evaluated in the donors. HBsAg and anti-HCV rates were found to be 1.48 % and 0.10 % in blood donors and 2.5 % and 0 % in
medical staff, respectively. Anti-HBs rate was found to be 41.2 % in medical staff. However, no HIV seropositivity was found in both
groups. This study is significant as blood donors constitute an important group in terms of both the determination of public's
seropositivity and the follow-up of the disease transmitted via transfusion and the decrease of risk since medical staff is in the high
risk group.
