Keywords: Candidemia, risk factors

The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors for the development of candidemia. The patients with candidemia were assessed prospectively at the Ondokuz Mayıs University Hospital between 1 May and 31 December 2009. Fifty-six patients were enrolled in the study. The study population was divided into two groups as Candida albicans fungemia (Group 1, n:24) and non-albicans candidemia (Group 2, n:32). There was no statistically significant difference between both groups in terms of age, hospital stay (Group 1: 33±26.5 days, Group 2: 41±21.3 days), duration of urinary catheterization (Group 1: 50±27.9 days, Group 2: 26±20 days), duration of central venous catheterization (Group 1: 32±31.2 days, Group 2: 28±20.3 days) and duration of total parenteral nutrition (Group 1: 30±30.7 days, Group 2: 27±18.6 days). Nevertheless, total parenteral nutrition was significantly higher in Group 1 than in Group 2 (88% versus 72%, p: 0.018). There was not any statistical difference between both groups regarding other risk factors.

In conclusion, the study showed that total parenteral nutrition is the only risk factor candidemia caused by C. albicans as well as by non-albicans Candida species. The high incidence of candidemia caused by non-albicans strains was an important finding.
