Rubella infection of the fetus can lead to fetal death or serious congenital birth defects in the newborn. The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of rubella in childbearing-aged (16-49 year-old) women. Totally 830 females' (mean age: 29.69±6.08) sera were investigated for rubella IgM and IgG with ELISA at the Department of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology, Adnan Menderes Universty Hospital, between November 2005 and November 2007. While rubella IgM antibodies was found positive in 0.97% of tested serum samples, positivity for rubella IgG antibodies was 92.99%. It was concluded that 7% of women were susceptible for rubella and so at the risk of congenital rubella syndrome.
