Medical care workers who are nasal carriers of Staphylococcus aureus are considered to be responsible for methicilin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) epidemics in hospitals, to a large extent. Nasal colonization by MRSA strains is primarily caused by contaminated hands. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of nasal carriage of staphylococci in health care workers and the effect of local mupirosin on the elimination of staphylococci. Totally 310 health care workers in Konya Beyhekim Mouth and Dental Health Care Center and Konya Educational and Research Hospital were investigated. For identification and antimicrobial sensitivity test results, ID panels from Phoenix (Becton Dickinson, USA) device were used. Nasal S. aureus carrier rate was found to be of 8.7 %. Of all S. aureus isolated from nasal area, 3 (11 %) were MRSA and 24 (89 %) were methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA). The isolated strains showed no resistance rates to amoxicillin-clavulanate, cefazolin, cefoxitin, clindamycin, fusidic acid, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, mupirocin, ofloxacin, rifampin, teicoplanin, tetracyclin and vancomycin. The administration of intranasal mupirocin to all carriers for 10 days resulted in elimination of staphylococci with a success rate of 100%. It was concluded that topical mupirosin is an effective agent to be used securely in the elemination of S. aureus colonization in nasal carriers.
