The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of blood cultures which were cultured in BacT/Alert hemoculture system in the Microbiology Laboratory, Pamukkale University Hospital, between July 1999 and June 2001. While no growth occured in 1602 (77%) of total 2079 blood cultures, 394 (18.9%) were growth positive, 72 (3.4%) were false-positive and 11 (0.5%) were false-negative. The contamination rate was 3.9%. Coagulase-negative staphylococ were the most frequently isolated among all pathogens (40%). The mean times for detection of microbial growth were 33 hours for standard bottles and 20 hours for FAN bottles.
