Tuberculosis caused by strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistant to at least isoniazid and rifampicin is considered multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB). Treatment of patients with MDR TB involves second line drugs. The purpose of this study was to determine the susceptibility of multi-drug resistant M. tuberculosis strains to second line antituberculous drugs. Totally 64 MDR TB isolates obtained from different regions of Turkey were tested for susceptibility to second line drugs by microdilution broth minimum inhibitory concentration method. Susceptibility results of the isolates were determined as 82.8%, 56.3%, 54.7%, 48.4%, 32.8%, 18.8% for ciprofloxacin, amikacin, clarithromycin, capreomycin, ethionamide, and doxycycline, respectively. There was no isolate susceptible to rifabutin and cycloserine. These results could be helpful to plan the treatment of MDR TB patients in Turkey.
