In this study, detection of Helicobacter pylori by Gram staining, urease test and culture in antral biopsies of 200 subjects (98 females and 102 males) with gastrointestinal symptoms and determination of the rate of H. pylor presence according to endoscopic findings were aimed. Helicobacter pylori was determined in 49% by Gram staining, 35% by urease test and 39.5% by culture. The sensitivities and specificities of Gram staining, urease test and culture method were found as follows, respectively: 98.7% and 83.4%, 77.2% and 92%, 87.1% and 99%. According to the endoscopic findings, the presence of H. pylori was the highest (72.7%) in patients with duodenal ulcer. This ratio was found as 33.3% in patients with normal endoscopic findings. In conclusion; based on the various difficulties of using urease test and culture, Gram stain was found to be the best suited rapid method if used by the well-experienced.
