A two-year-old African girl was admitted to the hospital with complaints of fever, shivering and pallor for two weeks. It was learned that she had come from Burkinofasa, a country in Africa, ten days before her administration. Her physical examination revealed a body temperature of 38.5° C, pallor and hepatosplenomegaly. Her laboratory findings supported hemolytic anemia. The diagnosis was made by seeing the gametocytes of Plasmodium falciparum in thick blood films. Single dose of 25 mg/kg mefloquine was given for treatment which was successful. Since the patient came from an endemic region and P. falciparum is rarely seen in Turkey, this case was reported to attract attention to transport o malaria between countries and continents.
