The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate urinary infections in the elderly. Three hundred six patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs) and/or urosepsis seen at the Infection Disease and Clinical Microbiology Department, Ondokuz Mayıs University Hospital, between 1 January and 31 December 2005, were analysed. Of the 306 patients hospitalized, 49 (16%) were diagnosed urinary tract infections (UTIs) and/or urosepsis. Twenty six of patients (53%) with urinary infections were of age ≥ 65 years. Acute illness and poor prostration were higher in older patients than the younger ones (<65 years of age), and this difference was statistically significant (p<0.005). Escherichia coli was the most commonly isolated in urinary cultures in both groups. The most frequently used chemotherapeutic was ceftriaxone, and six of the older patients under therapy died. As a result, higher rates of morbidity was seen in older patients with urinary tract infections than those in the younger. It is of utmost importance to investigate for urinary infections and start proper antimicrobial treatment in acute illness and prostration develop in elderly patients.
