In this study we aimed to determine the distribution of Candida species isolated from the blood cultures of inpatients. Between January 2002 and December 2005 from 22.426 blood culture samples 241 (1.07%) candidemia episodes were found and 136 of them were included in this study. If the same species had been isolated two or more times from the same patient only one of them was evaluated. Of the 136 Candida species were 70 C. albicans (51.5%), 17 C. sake (12.5%), 12 C. inconspicua/norvegensis (8.8%), 9 C. tropicalis (6.6%), 7 C. parapsilosis (5.1%), 4 C. dubliniensis (2.9%) and 17 other candida species (12.5%). The ratio of non-albicans candida species was 48.5%. Although C. albicans was found to be the most frequent species the number of non-albicans Candida species was also high.
