Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Especially in recent years a substantial amount of studies are held to determine the relation between atherosclerosis and Helicobacter pylori. The aim of this study was to determine serum H. pylori IgG and IgA and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in atherosclerotic, ectatic and normal groups diagnosed by coronary angiography. Eighty-four patients were enrolled in the study. There were no difference in H. pylori IgG seroprevalence between atherosclerotic, ectatic and normal groups (p=0.772). Although serum CRP (6.59 mg/L in normal and 11.63 in three vessel involvement) levels and H. pylori IgA seropositivity (7.7% in normal and 18.8% in three vessel involvement) increase with the number of vessel involvement, the relation was not statistically related (p=0.271; p=0.942) which is probably related to the limited number of cases. There are studies that support or oppose the relation between H. pylori and atherosclerosis. To propose a definite relation, molecular identification methods, immunohistochemical procedures and studies with bigger groups should be performed.
