Keywords: Enterococci, vancomycin resistance, colonization

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) have emerged as a significant problem in the healthcare system. Enterococci, found in the normal flora inhabiting the human intestinal tract, have increasingly been isolated as pathogens. The purpose of this study was to determine the colonization and the resistance patterns of VRE from patients in various clinics. Totally 100 rectal swab cultures were taken for investigation of VRE colonisation (50 from risk group and 50 from non-risk group). Enterococci were isolated from 68 patients (35 from risk group, and the others from non-risk group). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of enterococcus colonization (p>0.05). The resistance to vancomycin was investigated by brain-heart infusion agar containing 6 µg/ml vancomycin. Thirteen (19.1%) species were found to be resistant to vancomycin 11 of which were taken from the risk group. There was a significant difference between the groups in terms of VRE colonisation (p<0.001). Teicoplanin, fusidic asit, erityhromycin, tetracycline and teicoplanin sensitivity of isolated strains was investigated by disk diffusion method. Fusidic acid was found to be the most effective antibiotic against VRE whereas rifampicin was the least. It was concluded that VRE are an important problem for the hospital.
