Borrelia burgdorferi IgM and IgG antibodies were investigated with ELISA in soldiers while examining them during their first recruitments in order to determine the existence and incidence of Lyme Disease in Northern Cyprus. The following tests were made from 91 individuals (35 females, 56 males, aged 19-23), mean age 20.1±1.2): ASO, CRP, RF, ESR, VDRL, Brucella agglutination test, serum immunglobulin and complement levels and B. burgdorferi IgM and IgG antibodies. All were negative for ASO, CRP, RF, VDRL, Brucella agglutination test, serum immunglobulin and complement levels; but three had elevated ESR, two (2.2 %) individuals were positive for B. burgdorferi IgM ad 16 (17.6 %) for B. burgdorferi IgG antibodies. These data indicate a considerable rate of the disease in the region. Lyme Disease must be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of infectious diseases in risky areas since clinical spectrum of the disease may vary.
