The aim of this study was to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility and metallo-beta lactamase (MBL) presence in Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains resistant to imipeneme (IPM) in a university hospital. Eighty-nine strains of P. aeruginosa isolated from various clinical specimens taken from patients in the Intensive Care Unit, Gaziantep University Hospital, in the period of January-March 2007, were prospectively studied. The studied samples were tracheal aspirate [33 (37.07%)], urine [17 (19.10%)], wound swab [13 (14.60%)], urinary catheter [10 (11.23%)], blood culture [6 (6.74%)], drain [5 (5.61%)] and broncho-alveolar lavage fluid [5 (5.61%)]. Eighteen (20.22%) of the strains were found resistant to IPM. Metallo-beta lactamase enzyme was tested by using IPM-EDTA disk in these 18 IPM resistant strains and the enzyme was found positive in 13 (72.22%) strains. In conclusion, MBL enzyme was
present in most of the IPM-resistant P. aeruginosa strains.
