Keywords: acinetobacter baumannii, tigecycline, in vitro susceptibility, E-test, intensive care unit

Acinetobacter baumannii is a frequent cause nosocomial infections in most hospitals. It is isolated as an agent of bacteremia, seconder meningitis, urinary tract infection, late beginning nosocomial pneumonia, particulary in patients in intensive care units (ICU). The bacterium shows high resistance to antimicrobials, leading to difficulties in treatment.

The aim of this study was to search the in vitro effect of tigecycline on A. baumannii strains, using E-test. The strains were isolated from tracheal aspirate [28 (45.16 %)], blood culture [9 (14.51 %)], wound [7 (11.29 %)], urine [7 (11.29 %)], catheter [6 (9.67 %)] and cerebrospinal fluid [5 (8.06 %)]. Of the 62 strains 50 (80.64 %) were found sensitive (MIC ≤ 2 μg/ml), 8 (12.90%) intermediately sensitive (MIC 4-6 μg/ml) and 4 (6.45 %) resistant (MIC ≥8 μg/ml) to tigecycline. MIC50 and MIC90 values were determined as 1 μg/ml and 4 μg/ml, respectively. It is concluded that tigecycline is quite effective on A. baumannii strains.
