The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between H. pylori infection and coronary heart disease (CHD). The existence and absence of CHD was confirmed by coronary angiography. Sera from the patient and control groups were analyzed for the presence of H. pylori specific IgG antibodies by ELISA. Chi-square test was used for stastica analyses. Seropositivity ratio of 60 % (78/130) for H. pylori in CHD was significantly higher than the 39.4 % (13/33) ratio of controls [p<0.01, Odd ratio (OR): 2.14, confidence interval (CI) 95%]. The 50.8% (31/61) seropositivity rate in patients of age 45-55 with CHD was significantly different than the seropositivity rate of patients aged 56-65 (p=0.04, Odd's ratio=2.05, confidence interval 95%). The seroprevalance of 45-55 aged controls was found as 35% (7/20), this was not significantly different than the ratio of 46.1% (6/13) in 56-65 aged controls. While 33 of 46 (71.7%) patients with dispeptic complaints had seropositivity for H. pylori IgG, only 58 of 117 (49.6%) subjects without dispeptic complaints were seropositive for H. pylori IgG. This difference was stastically significant (p<0.01, OR: 2.01, CO: 95%). It is concluded that H. pylori positivity can be a risk factor for CHD. The association needs further confirmation by future studies.
