Recently many reports indicate that community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are increasing in the community. Nasal carriage rate of MRSA can indicate the prevalence of community-acquired MRSA in the community. The purpose of this paper was to determine the prevalence of nasal carriage of S. aureus and MRSA in a group of 685 subjects working in the army. This group consisted of healthy males at the ages of 20 to 30 years. This group was chosen because the individuals came from different regions of Turkey. Forty-seven of the 685 subjects (6.86%) were found to be S. aureus carriers and from 685 nasal swabs collected, only two MRSA isolates (0.29%) were identified. Forty-five persons (6.57%) were nasal carriers for methicillin- susceptible S. aureus (MSSA).
