Transportation of Helicobacter pylori under appropriate conditions is important for isolation and antibiotic susceptibility tests. The purpose of this study was to compare four different media used in the transport of H. pylori. The viability of H. pylori for 24 hours were tested in four different media, namely, trypticase soya broth (TSB), TSB supplemented with 10% horse serum, 0.9% NaCl and 20% hypertonic dextrose. There was no statistically significant difference in the viability of the bacterium between TSB, TSB supplemented with 10% horse serum and 0.9% NaCl at the end of one and 24 hour(s) (X = 4.28, p: 0.11). It is suggested that 0.9% NaCl, inexpensive and easily prepared, is a reliable medium for transportation of gastric biopsies for culturing of H. pylori. Hypertonic dextrose was evaluated as an inappropriate transport medium for the bacterium.
