To evaluate the risk factors associated with recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI), a case-control study was conducted comparing 140 patients referring to an infectious diseases outpatient clinic who had a history of recurrent UTI (case patients) with 130 age, sex-matched control patients without a history of UTI. Of the 140 case patients; 80 were women, 30 were men and 30 were children. Fifty women were of age 18-40 (premenopausal) and 30 of them were over 40 years of age (menopausal). Each patient completed a questionnaire on earlier history of UTI, frequency of repeat episodes of UTI, maternal history of UTI, recent antibiotic use, marriage status and hygienic measures. In adddition, physical examination of genitourinary system and laboratory investigations were made. In conclusion; the data obtained support the view that some factors significantly influence the incidence of recurrent UTI among different groups, that is, premenopausal, menapausal, men and children groups. These factors vary according to the groups. In premenopausal women these factors are history of UTI, having UTI history under the age of 15, recent antibiotic use and inappropriate hygienic measures. In menopausal group, the factors are history of UTI, recent antibiotic use, incontinence, postvoiding residual urine and inappropriate hygienic measures. In the group of men; history of UTI, recent antibiotic use, incontinence, postvoiding residual urine, underlying patogenic disorders and inappropriate hygienic measures are risk factors. The risk factors for children are history of UTI, maternal history of UTI and recent antibiotic use.
