THE SEROPREVALENCE OF BRUCELLOSIS AND DISEASE-RELATED KNOWLEDGE-ATTITUDE OF THE POPULATION IN OVAKENT, TIRE-IZMIR |

The aim of this study was to determine the sero-prevalence of brucellosis and the knowledge and attitude of a group of milk and dairy producers. Cross sectional analytic study was performed in Ovakent-Tire, İzmir, between April and June 2003. Among the population 293 persons older than 15 years of 5137 was included considering with a prevalence of brucellosis as 8%. Out of 293. 257 persons (87.7%) were reached. A questionnaire was given out to determine the knowledge and behavior related to brucellosis and then serum samples were taken to measure antibodies to brucella. In 18 (7.0%) brucella agglutinin test was found above titer 1/160. In the population 51% livestock or cattle and 47.1% was milk producers. The seropositivity to brucella was higher in the group of milk producers (p =0.028). The consumption of milk without boiling and fresh cheese were 3.9% and 39.3%, respectively. It is concluded that it is important to increase the knowledge on the ways of spread of and protection against brucellosis in order to prevent and eradicate the disease in animals.
