This study was designed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Escherichia coli urinary isolates from patients consulted in state primary care clinics in Sivas. During January 2006-December 2006 period, 196 E. coli strains were isolated from community acquired urinary tract infections and their antibiotic susceptibility tests were carried out using disk diffusion method. The resistance rates of E. coli strains were as follows: To trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (34.7%), ampicillin (28%), amoxicillinclavulanate (22.0%), ciprofloxacin (12.7%), gentamicin (11.7%), ceftazidim (9.2%), cephalotin (5.1%), cefuroxim (2.5%), aztreonam (1.5%), amikacin (0.5%). In order to determine the empirical therapy, especially in primary care patients, it is important to know the local resistance patterns of the agents to these antimicrobials.
