The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of nasal Staphylococcus aureus in hospital staff. Nasal S. aureus carriage
was investigated in the 136 staff members in the Kayseri Military Hospital in May-June 2007. In isolated strains of S.
aureus, susceptibility to oxacillin, erythromycin, vancomycin, trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazol, gentamycin, fusidic acid, mupirocin,
tetracycline, rifampycin, clindamycin using disk diffusion method was studied. There were 17 (13.2%) doctors, 32 (24.6%) nurses,
12 (9.2%) supportive personnel, 1 (0.8%) pharmacist, 29 (22.3%) civilian staff members, 34 (26.4%) soldiers, 5 (3.8%)
noncommissioned officers in the study group. Metisilin-resistant S. aureus carriage rate was 5.6%. No antibacterial resistance was
found against clindamycin, vancomycin, gentamycin and mupirocin. Resistance rates against erythromycin, trimethoprimsulphamethoxazol,
fusidic acid, rifampycin and tetracycline were; 22.2%, 11.1%, 8.3%, 5.6% and 16.7%, respectively.
