INVESTIGATION OF HEMOLYTIC ACTIVITY IN CANDIDA SPECIES

Hemolysins are known to be putative virulence factors contributing to pathogenicity in Candida species. The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of hemolytic activity in clinical Candida isolates. A total of 104 Candida isolates representing eight species was evaluated for their in-vitro hemolytic activity on 3%-enriched sheep blood Sabouraud-dextrose agar. Candida albicans, C. tropicalis, C. glabrata, C. kefyr and C. krusei species demonstrated beta-hemolysis at 48 h postinoculation. Alpha hemolysis was detectable in 3 C. guilliermondii and 3 Geotrichum candidum isolates. Four C. parapsilosis isolates failed to demonstrate any hemolytic activity after incubation for 48 h or longer. The detection of hemolytic activity among clinical Candida isolates may warn the clinician for a possible Candida-related hematogenous infection.
